Rumors are starting to go around that Andre Drummond could be making his way to the Boston Celtics. According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, there could be a possible Gordon Hayward-Andre Drummond swap.
“Something I’ve been hearing across the league the last few days is while we don’t know how the Gordon Hayward situation is going to shake out, something that could be possible is a Gordon Hayward-Andre Drummond swap,” Mannix said. “That’s something that a lot of league execs I’ve been talking to have discussed.”
I just want to start by saying this: the Celtics don’t need Andre Drummond. People see the name, all the rebounds, and the fact that he finished top-8 in Defensive Player of the Year voting and think he’s a top center in the NBA. Quite frankly, he’s not.
It’s baffling that he finished so high on the Defensive Player of the Year rankings, but it’s because he received just one (1) first-place vote. The reason why fans want Drummond in Boston is because of his “defense” and ability to rebound the ball 15/20 times a game. To be completely honest with you guys, besides the rebounding, he’s overrated.
Drummond has quick hands and has the size and athleticism to be a defensive anchor, but he’s lazy. He shows a lack of effort on the defensive end, and that’s something that has stuck with him throughout his career. Maybe being in a losing environment for a majority of his career is to blame for it, but at this point in his career, it’s something he should have figured out.
Maybe a change of scenery would be good for him. I love the idea of having a big man that can rebound and be a major presence down in the paint, but Drummond ultimately might hurt the team on the defensive end.
What I believe this comes down to is his attitude. If Drummond can pick up the slack and turn into a defensive monster, as he should be, by coming to Boston, then I’m all for it. I just don’t think Drummond would fit, judging by what I’ve seen from him over the years. If he changes it up by coming to a winning organization, that could all change.
For now, I’d take this rumor with a grain of salt. Andre Drummond’s name has been tied to Boston for some time now, probably because he went to HS and college in the New England area. I can’t tell you I’d be on board with making this move, but if it does happen, I pray Andre Drummond proves me wrong and steps it up in Boston.
