Danny Ainge Made the Right Move By Not Trading Jayson Tatum for Anthony Davis

Well guys, the Lakers finally did it. They finally acquired Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans, and LeBron finally has a superstar next to him. In a package that included Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and 5 first-round picks (#4 included), both teams came out of this trade looking pretty good going into next season.

Anthony Davis to LA was inevitably going to happen, whether it was via trade or free agency. The Boston Celtics were rumored to be heavily engaged with New Orleans about a deal, but Danny Ainge wasn’t willing to give up his most valuable assets for what would’ve been a one-year rental.

Some people may say he’s stupid for holding onto his assets and not making a huge trade, but those people don’t understand the situation the Celtics would be in if he had made a trade. First off, Ainge didn’t make a trade because he is uncertain with what Kyrie’s going to do in free agency. If he had some sort of commitment from Kyrie, he would’ve pulled the trigger. It was too much to risk giving up a player like Jayson Tatum for a guy who was going to head to LA in a year, and without Kyrie on the team, it would’ve been guaranteed he wasn’t going to stay in Boston.

Trading Jayson Tatum would’ve arguably been one of the worst moves Danny Ainge could’ve made as a GM because if Anthony Davis walked after a year, the Celtics would have nearly nothing to build around. At least if Kyrie doesn’t come back, we have Jaylen and Jayson to build around. It was simply not worth trading a player who has as much potential as Tatum has, for a one-year rental, especially with the uncertainty of Kyrie coming back. Jayson Tatum is insurance for Boston if Kyrie leaves.

People can make all the jokes about Danny Ainge overvaluing his young guys and assets, but any NBA fan who knows the situation Boston is in knows this would’ve been a stupid trade to make. If we lost Kyrie, Davis, and Tatum, the team would be stuck in a tough spot for years to come. I love Jaylen Brown, but you can’t build around him as your best player going forward.

Jayson Tatum has the potential to become a superstar. Will he actually become a superstar? We’ll have to wait and see, but one thing is for sure, and that’s if Kyrie leaves, Jayson Tatum will become the face of the Boston Celtics. The team might not be contending for championships for a few years without Kyrie on the team, but we can get excited about Jayson Tatum and how amazing he’ll be moving forward.
