Celtics’ fans can expect this summer to be a busy one. With the way the season ended and multiple players expected to hit the market in free agency, Danny Ainge and company will be very active this offseason.
Whether it’s re-signing players back to the team, letting guys walk, or making a blockbuster trade, all options are on the table for the Celtics this summer. Celtics’ Assistant GM Mike Zarren is prepared for anything to happen, and told Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe that the team has some big decisions to make.
“Given the state of our roster and the draft assets we have now and going forward, nearly any kind of transaction is in play. To trade for players around the league, to move up or down in the draft, for future picks, to use our picks,” Zarren told Himmelsbach. “We’ve got a lot of flexibility this summer, but also a lot of big decisions to make. So the next two months are going to be very, very busy.”
The offseason can be unpredictable, and the Celtics have to prepare for different scenarios and how to follow up on them. The end goal is to put together the best team possible.
“I think there’s just more uncertainty about the path moving forward,” Zarren said. “There’s a lot of different ways the summer could go. And that’s our job, over the next bunch of weeks, is to figure out what the best path is from here.
Zarren notes that there will be more certainty with the team’s direction after the first few decisions are made.
“We’re going to get a lot of clarity on the direction of the team, both from the decisions we make internally and from the decisions other people make in the next month,” Zarren said. “But it’s still very close to the end of the season, so we’re not at the point where we have clarity on exactly the path we’ll be going on.”
Although he doesn’t mention it, the Celtics have to wait and see what Kyrie Irving does once free agency starts. The team will go down two very different directions if he decides to stay or leave, and that’s where the uncertainty comes from. The Celtics don’t know what they’ll be doing until Kyrie makes his decision.
Buckle up, Celtics fans. This summer is going to be one of the more hectic ones we’ve seen in a while. So many different scenarios can play out and can change the teams’ plans on the dot. Knowing that the team isn’t afraid to make a trade excites me because of their willingness to make this team better any way they possibly can. I’ve always trusted Danny Ainge, and I will continue to do so.
All I know is that Ainge is going to try and equip the best team he possibly can for next year. Expect the unexpected, Celtics fans. Who knows what Danny Ainge has up his sleeve.
