Report: Anthony Davis Could Sign A Long Term Deal with the Celtics Even if Kyrie Irving Doesn’t Re-Sign in Boston

The Celtics’ season may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean the rumors do!

As we all know, the Celtics always seem to have their name thrown out there when superstars become available. Why is this? Well, Danny Ainge has done a decent job over the years of adding up enough assets to pull off a blockbuster trade.

Anthony Davis’ name has been tied to Boston for some time. Anthony Davis’ departure from New Orleans was something anybody with common sense could’ve seen coming. So when it became officially official that Davis wanted out of New Orleans, the Celtics were one of the first teams that people thought of as a possible destination.

Unfortunately for the Celtics, trading for AD was something they couldn’t do at the time. This is because they couldn’t possibly trade for Davis while Kyrie was still under his current contract. As we inch closer to the offseason, Boston’s name should re-appear in Davis discussions because then they’d be able to make a deal.

It’s unknown what Kyrie will do this summer, but pairing him alongside Anthony Davis has to be something Danny Ainge has his sights set on. Sending away one of Jaylen or Jayson, with other role players and draft picks would suck, but acquiring another superstar to put alongside Kyrie would be worth it.

Surely you’d think AD would want to sign long term in Boston if Kyrie was with him, but what if Kyrie doesn’t stay in Boston? Would Danny Ainge still make a trade for Davis without assurance he’ll re-sign, or does he build around a Kyrie-less team? As crazy as it might sound, he still might make that trade, and now with this new report from David Aldridge, it might not backfire on him.

David Aldridge gave an update on the Anthony Davis situation as we get closer to the offseason:

“I’ve heard that Davis wouldn’t completely rule out staying with the Celtics without Irving, but the odds of him re-upping in that scenario are significantly lower.”

Now let me say this: I would not trade for Anthony Davis if the Celtics lose Kyrie. There would be no point in trading away young players and assets for a superstar when the point of acquiring that superstar was to pair him with Kyrie. It’s interesting to hear that he may be open to the idea of being the lone-superstar in Boston, but I wouldn’t put my money on it, and neither should Danny Ainge.
