With the 27th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics select Robert Williams III from Texas A&M. At 27, Williams was an absolute steal. In the latest mock drafts, I saw him go anywhere between 12 and 15.
Robert Williams’ NBA comparison is Clint Capela. He’s a big man who has great footwork, can run the floor, block shots, and make plays at the basket. His work ethic and attitude are what caused him to slide as much as he did in the draft, but with the right team (wink wink), coaching, and leadership, that can all change.
During his sophomore year at Texan A&M, he averaged 10.4 points and 9.2 rebounds on 63.2% shooting. He also averaged 2.5 blocks a game during his college career (2.6 last season). He’s a poor shooter all-around (47% from the free throw line and 0% from three last season), but that’s something that can always be worked on.
Williams will come in right away and make a contribution on this team. He’ll see minutes off the bench, I would say in Baynes’ spot, and continually get more and more minutes as time goes on. If he turns his act around and reaches out his full potential, the Celtics just got the biggest steal of the draft. No trades were even needed to get him, too.
Welcome to Boston, Robert Williams. You’re going to fit in just fine, and I can’t wait to see how the early part of your young career plays out.
