With the NBA season finally over and the NBA Draft right around the corner, trade talks are heating up around the league. I put together possible trade scenarios that could happen before, during, or after draft night. Be aware, a lot of these trades may involve the Boston Celtics.
76ers trade: Jahlil Okafor/Nerlens Noel and Nik Stauskas
Celtics trade: 3rd overall pick, Avery Bradley, and Marcus Smart
This is a trade that’s been thrown around for a little bit now. The Celtics tried trading for Jahlil before the trade deadline but with no success. The Celtics would trade their 3rd pick and two of their guards for one of the 76ers’ big men. It works for both teams since the Celtics have a logjam at the guard position and 76ers have a logjam at their center position. Now whether it’s Jahlil or Noel that gets traded I don’t know, but expect the 76ers to trade one of the two.
Bulls trade: Derrick Rose
Knicks trade: Jose Calderon, Robin Lopez, and future picks
The Bulls are looking to rebuild, and Derrick Rose could be the first guy out. Since his ACL injury, he’s never been the same, and with $20+ million left on his contract, he could be moved. The Knicks are looking for a point guard and could take the risk. They’d send Calderon and Lopez to even out salaries and maybe throw in a few future picks. The Bulls get a big man that would replace Noah and Gasol, who seems to be out the door, and a point guard to hold them over for a bit.
Bulls trade: Jimmy Butler
Celtics trade: 3rd overall pick, Avery Bradley, and Jae Crowder
This is a crazy trade scenario that’s been talked about for weeks. The Celtics want to bring in a star to bring alongside Isaiah Thomas and hopefully lure in other big-name free agents. I don’t know why the Bulls would trade Butler, but apparently, they’re looking to rebuild from the ground up. The Celtics would be perfect trade partners. They’d give the Bulls the 3rd pick, a good replacement in Bradley, and a young player in Jae Crowder that’s shown he’s a very good player. I don’t see the Bulls trading Butler, but if they do expect the Celtics to be involved.
Bulls trade: Jimmy Butler
Timberwolves trade: 5th overall pick, Zach Lavine, and Ricky Rubio
Again with Butler. The only reason this could work is because the Bulls get the 5th pick, a young prospect in Lavine, and Rubio, who could be Derrick Rose’s replacement in the upcoming years. Butler would reunite with Tom Thibodeau as well. I don’t see this happening but you never know.
Knicks trade: Carmelo Anthony
Cavaliers trade: Kevin Love
Knicks receive: 3rd overall pick, Marcus Smart, other future picks
Cavaliers receive: Carmelo Anthony
Celtics receive: Kevin Love
It seems like Kevin Love has been in trade talks forever. After a lackluster finals performance, the Cavaliers are reportedly open to hearing trade offers for the all-star forward. LeBron has always wanted to play with his best friend Carmelo, so a swap could happen. Carmelo would have to waive his no-trade clause, but I’m sure that wouldn’t be an issue here. I put the Celtics in a different scenario because they’ve wanted Kevin Love for a while now, and if he’s available they’re going after him. The Celtics could send picks and a young point guard to the Knicks to receive Love. The only issue is if the Celtics would be willing to part with that 3rd overall pick for Kevin Love, who has decreased in value.
Bulls trade: Derrick Rose and future picks
Nets trade: Brook Lopez and Jarrett Jack
The Knicks aren’t the only team that could be interested in trading for Derrick Rose. The Nets could look to trade for Rose, a point guard they desperately need. They’d have to send over arguably their best player Brook Lopez and veteran guard Jarrett Jack. The Nets may be hesitant to do this, but their minds could change if picks are sent their way.
Celtics trade: 3rd overall pick and Avery Bradley/Marcus Smart
Bucks trade: Khris Middleton and 10th pick
This is a new trade that’s popped up. Danny Ainge has inquired about Khris Middleton, a young, sharpshooting guard that the Celtics have been looking add to their roster for many years. In order to get him, it seems they’d have to give up their coveted 3rd overall pick and one of their young guards. I’m sure the Celtics would like to receive the Bucks’ pick in return to still be able to draft in the lottery.
Lakers trade: D’Angelo Russell
Suns trade: Eric Bledsoe, Tyson Chandler, and 4th overall pick
This is a trade I made up on my own, but since the videotape controversy a few months back, the Lakers don’t know what to do with D’Angelo Russell. Locker room issues have been caused because of this and have made the Lakers consider trading him. If they do trade him they’d obviously want a top pick in return. The Suns could get involved and trade guard Eric Bledsoe and big man Tyson Chandler, along with their number 4 pick. This is unlikely to happen, but this is the only team with a high pick making an offer that I could see intriguing the Lakers.
